Descendents Visit the Lighthouse

August 4, 2007

The August Open House was a scorcher, with temperatures in the upper 90s.  The lighthouse is still without electricity, which was very noticeable around 11 am when the breeze off of the Potomac River abandoned the volunteers and visitors.

Over 150 visitors toured the lighthouse, including our very special guests Judy Dunn, Jenny Dunn and Erika van der Zon.  Judy and Jenny are descendents of keeper Thomas Jacobson, who served as keeper of Point Lookout Lighthouse from May 1, 1912 until August 30, 1917.  Judy is Mr. Jacobson's great granddaughter; Jenny is his great-great granddaughter, and Judy's daughter.  Lighthouse historian Robert Hall took the family on a tour of the lighthouse, pointing out the differences between how the structure looked during Mr. Jacobson's five year tenure and the way that it looks today.  The trio visited the park in the fall of last year and were almost stranded because of the high winds and flooding caused by a Nor'easter.  Judy also shared an instrument case that belonged to former keeper Thomas Jacobson.

We hope to see them again at a future open house!
