Maryland State Senator Roy Dyson Attends June Open House

June 5, 2010

The June open house was slower than usual with only 116 visitors, most likely caused by the hottest July on record- and recent memory! Considering the low turnout, PLLPS actually had respectable sales and donations. Also, the Washington Post did not list our June event as they have been doing for the past 2 years. We have contacted the newspaper about including our event and also requested that a "Call for Volunteers" listing be posted in the Southern Maryland Extra section.

Our volunteer coordinator, Chuck Kohls, has procured an air conditioner from Freecycle! We plan to put the new electrical system to good work during the hot open houses. We will keep the gift shop in the north side living room cool so that our visitors can comfortably browse the PLLPS merchandise.

Preservation Director Sandra Sableski, Senator Roy Dyson and Robert Hall in the north side living room.

State Senator Roy Dyson attended the open house and listened with keen interest as we showed him some of the progress that PLLPS volunteers have made since his last visit. Of course the completion of the first phase of the electrical upgrade topped our list of accomplishments. As always, we appreciate Senator Dyson's support for this Maryland treasure that is so symbolic of the maritime heritage of St. Mary's County.

As a reminder, our July Open House will be on the SECOND Saturday of the month (July 10th) due to the July 4th Holiday Weekend. The park quickly fills to capacity on holiday weekends, making it difficult to accomodate visitors to the lighthouse.

Happy July 4th!
